CAVS QB SUSPENDED FOR SEASON

B.J. Hawkins' once-promising football career took another unfortunate turn Thursday, when the University of Virginia announced he had been suspended for the 1993 season.

Hawkins, selected to several All-America teams while at Potomac High School in Dumfries, played briefly for the Cavaliers last season and had no passing or rushing attempts. It was his first season of eligibility after transferring from Notre Dame.

Hawkins played for Notre Dame as a freshman in 1990, but fractured his right (throwing) arm at the end of spring drills that year.

A two-paragraph announcement released Thursday by the UVa sports information office indicated Hawkins had violated team rules and would miss the 1993 season, although he will remain on scholarship. His status will be evaluated after the season for what would be his final year of eligibility in 1994.

"It's a shock to me," said Bill Brown, who coached Hawkins at Potomac before taking the job at Hylton High School in Prince William County. "I talked with [UVa's] coaches in the spring and they felt he was doing better with his work habits and that things were on an upswing."

UVa coach George Welsh was out of town and could not be reached for comment.

"I don't have anything to say other than what's in the news release," said Walter Hawkins, who said he was speaking in his son's behalf. "He will be a student in the fall and for that we're grateful. Whether the school has been fair or not, we've got to live with it."
