OBIT-BROWN, JULIA METTS
BROWN, Julia Metts, 95, formerly of Glade Hill, died Thursday morning, July
1, 1993 in Franklin Health Care Center. She was born in Franklin County
February 1, 1898, the daughter of the late Thomas I. and Mary Bishop Metts and
was preceded in death by her husband, John Thomas Brown, a son Wilbur Edward
(Brownie) Brown, a son-in-law, James W. Shea, and a granddaughter Karen Brown
Shea. Mrs. Brown became a member of Bethel Primitive Baptist Church June 5,
1965, was the vice-chairman of the American Red Cross from 1917-1918. In 1932
she organized the Ladies Auxiliary, Rural Mail Carriers Association, and held
several state and national offices. An active leader and supporter of the
Glade Hill High School, she was a key person in establishing the auditorium,
and serving as president of the P.T.O. In 1945 she began teaching, a
profession she loved and continued her teaching career until retirement in
1963. Surviving is one daughter, Doris (Dottie) B. Shea of Union Hall and
Naples, Fla.; one granddaughter, Joyce Ann Shea and special friend, Bill
Collins of Naples, Fla.; one daughter-in-law, Dora Goad Brown of Rocky Mount;
one sister, Lucy J. Metz of Roanoke. Funeral services will be conducted 11
a.m. Saturday from Lynch Chapel by Elders Junior Conner and W.T. Conner with
interment to follow in Franklin Memorial Park. Visitation will begin after 2
p.m. Friday at Lynch Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 7
till 9 p.m. The family suggest that memorials my be given to the Bethel
Primitive Baptist Church, Route 1, Box 180, Glade Hill, Va. 24092.
