Church names in the news:

\ JACKIE BYRD will join the staff of Blacksburg Baptist Church on Aug. 15 as the associate pastor for children and their parents

She was a Gilbert Linkous Elementary School teacher for 16 years.

Byrd, a graduate of Radford University, has pursued graduate studies at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky., and at Virginia Tech.

\ ANGELA AREHART of Pulaski has been licensed to the Gospel ministry at Pulaski Church of the Brethren.

She now serves Hiwassee Church of the Brethren as minister of nurture and visitation.

\ MARLENE MCGRATH, campus minister at Virginia Tech's Newman Community for Roman Catholic students, faculty and staff for seven years, will move to Richmond, where she plans to assist new mothers in "a form of hands-on ministry."

\ ST. MARY'S ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH, Blacksburg, has added new Ordinary Time paraments to the altar and other furnishings at the church. The paraments, which include vestments, altar cloths and hangings, were designed, sewn and quilted by a group of church members that included Lisa Connelly, Robin DeBord, Christine Frederick, Bea Kalka, Martha Orth and Ann Wilson.

In designing the paraments, the group combined basic green - the liturgical color of the season - with blocks of all the colors of the rainbow in a shape that appears to include the rainbow's arch.

Kalka, who has made other vestments for the Easter and Christmas seasons, said the 10-piece set of paraments enhances the liturgical season. It also provided an opportunity for sharing among church members. "All of us, working together, got an opportunity to get to know each other better," she said. "Each of us brought different talents to the work and shared them to create a greater piece."
