Federal firearms authorities say four people tried to cart almost 250 guns north out of Newport News a few weeks before a handgun-a-month purchase limit took effect Thursday. Many of the guns are unrecovered and assumed to have been sold on the streets of New York City.
"If the one-gun-a-month law had been in effect, this obviously would not have happened," said Ron Tarrington, agent in charge of the Norfolk office of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms.
