NO RIGHT TO BE GERMAN

I DISAGREE completely with columnist William Safire's assertion on June 27 ("Europe slams shut the gates") that Turks residing in Germany are somehow "entitled" to citizenship there.

Turkish nationals who emigrated to Germany for economic benefit did so without the slightest suggestion they would ever be offered citizenship. The fact that some Turks living there may now desire naturalization does not constitute an entitlement. Whether or not Germany decides to grant such status is purely that country's business.

Safire might do better to confine his topics to issues concerning the United States where he, at least, has entitlement to an opinion.
