At approximately 10 p.m., Lawhorn ran away from the field and won the 100-lap Late Model Stock Car feature of the first night of the Pepsi 600. The victory was his third of the season, but his first since May 15.
"We've been finishing in the top five about every week, but tonight feels especially good," said Lawhorn, second to Rick Sigmon in the points race.
Lawhorn seized the lead during a caution on lap 58, when pole-sitter Tim McGuire made a brief pit stop. McGuire rallied to finish a solid second, but he didn't have enough laps to catch Lawhorn.
Tim McGuire's brother Tony, who entered the race 14th in points after two previous appearances, placed third. Ronnie Newman and Bobby Radford finished fourth and fifth, respectively.
John Hall prevailed in the Mini Stock race, outrunning points leader Steve Lynch (second) and last year's points champion, Tommy Dean (third). Hall collected a $200 prize for knocking off Lynch, who had won the four previous weeks.
Phillip VanDerVeer padded his points lead with victory No. 8 in the Street Stock division. Last week's winner, Lonnie Foley, and Mike Dudley finished second and third, respectively.
In Pure Stock, Leon Moles returned to the winner's circle for the first time since April, outrunning points leader R.W. Lawhorn (second) and Red Hartman (third).
Steve Hurley, second in points in the Rookie division, closed the gap with his first victory of the season. Jimmy Wilson was second, and George Blankenship placed a season-best third.
Dean Sutphin won the Any Car finale.
Racing returns to FCS at 6 p.m. today. All classes will compete, running extra laps. Rodney "Six-Pack" Cundiff and a host of other New River Valley Speedway regulars are expected to enter the 104-lap Late Model race.
Tonight's Any Car competition will feature a $2,000 purse. Fireworks will follow the racing.
