Ring was a member of the Botetourt County Board of Supervisors from 1984-88 and president of Roanoke Hollins Stock Yard in Hollins, his wife, Juliet, said Saturday.
He attended Roanoke College but dropped out during his junior year in 1942 to join the Navy. He was a medic aboard a submarine during World War II even though he'd had no medical training, his wife said.
"Submarines didn't have doctors back then," she said. "That was kind of difficult for a 19-year-old fellow with no training. Boy, did he have some war stories."
Ring was a Mason and belonged to the Rotary club, she said. He also was a member of the Nimrod Hunting Club in Bath County from 1949 until he gave up hunting a few years ago.
"He wasn't a golf and tennis type of person," she said. "He was a hunting and fishing type of guy."
Oakey's North Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
