THE DEMOGRAPHICS OF JAZZ
ON A RECENT day at Elizabeth Park, the Cave Spring High School stage band
played "Harlem Nocturne" and "Birdland." The demographics of the school's
neighborhood probably accounted for the band's apparently all-white
composition, as it were. One noticed more ominously, perhaps, that the crowd
was also all white. Are many blacks - local, area and countrywide - becoming
turned off to the very culture they have contributed so vitally to? BOB
