Crestar Bank has kicked off a drive to make credit more accessible for qualified small businesses in Virginia, Washington and Maryland.
The bank earmarked at least $200 million for small-business loans in those areas. The 60-day campaign will involve in-person calls on more than 2,500 small businesses. Crestar also streamlined its application process.
Crestar has about $700 million in loans outstanding to businesses with annual sales under $2 million. Of that, about $175 million is in its western region, headquartered in Roanoke. - Staff report

\ NationsBank Corp. has completed its acquisition of Chicago Research and Trading Group Ltd., an options and futures trading concern, for $225 million. The company's name will be changed to NationsBanc-CRT, and its headquarters will remain in Chicago.
\ General Electric Co.will cut about 100 jobs at its Warren, Ohio, lamp plant and transfer them to divisions in Virginia, Canada and Mexico. The moves will take effect in December.
