SOMETHING NEW FOR NEARLY EVERYONE

A recent report from the U.S. Department of Agriculture says there were 16,000 new food items on retail store shelves in 1991.

News - and sometimes samples, too - of a number of these new entries, as well as word on cookbooks, contests, gadgets and more gewgaws than we could ever write about, cross our food desk every day. Here is a sample of some of the most intriguing, worst and best:

Not too long ago, a package arrived containing two shriveled brownish objects that at first glance might have been something obscene. Turns out they were Sonoma Dried Bananas from California-based Timber Crest Farms.

The peeled Cavendish bananas, like their common fresh counterparts, contain about 100 calories, depending on size. They can be stored up to six months in a refrigerator or for several months in the freezer. Look for them at health food stores, gourmet shops or larger supermarkets.
