GLENVAR'S GOLFER WINS JUNIOR TOURNAMENT

Glenvar's Nick Varney rallied with a 1-over-par 73 on Wednesday to win the 14- and 15-year-old title at the the third Andrew Haley Memorial Junior golf tournament.

Varney, 15, who was four shots back after a first-round 77, finished one shot ahead of Hampton's Jack Tsai, who bogeyed the final hole to shoot 77-151.

South Boston's Willy Thompson (153) was third, while Troutville's Mark Sweeney and Martinsville's Marty Stanley tied for fourth at 155 on the Lynwood Golf & Country Club course.

In the 16-18 division, Gretna's Brandon Scruggs fired the lowest round of the tournament - a 2-under 70 - to finish at 3-under 141. Bassett's Brad Lawrence (72) finished at 147.

Floyd's Tim Bower, one shot back after a first-round 72, struggled to a 79 on Wednesday. Bower regrouped to win a four-way playoff for third at 151 with Roanoke's Ryan Ketron (75), Sandy Level's Stuart Meese (78) and Christiansburg's Benjamin Kitts (73).

Michael Loftin of Stoneville, N.C., won the 12-13 division. Loftin, who shot a first-round 72 from the red tees, ballooned to 83 on Wednesday. He still finished eights shots ahead of runner-up Brandon La Croix (79) of Roanoke.

Scruggs' sister, Shelby, shot 81-164 en route to a seven-shot victory over Susan McArthur of Critz in the girls' division.
