The $6.8 million project, financed through bonds and $1.3 million in donations from the community, adds 22,000 square feet to the 37-bed hospital. Another 45,000 square feet was renovated.
"The new Franklin Memorial Hospital is well prepared to meet the challenges facing the health-care industry in the coming years," said Thomas Robertson, president of Carilion Health System. "Franklin Memorial stands ready for the 21st century."
The hospital, which opened in 1952, became a Carilion affiliate in 1988.
The expansion, which took two years, includes a new obstetrical wing with two birthing suites that will allow labor, delivery and recovery in the same room.
A new ambulatory-care building will offer centralized outpatient services and an expanded emergency room.
