HEPATITIS DRUG TESTS PROBED AFTER 2 DEATHS

The Food and Drug Administration is investigating the trial of an experimental hepatitis drug in which two patients, including one in Virginia, died and others became seriously ill, a spokeswoman for the agency said Wednesday.

The drug's manufacturer, Eli Lilly & Co., also has begun to investigate the trial of Fialuridine, said Dr. Allen Weinstein, the company's vice president for research.

Clinical trials of the drug, which had showed promise as a treatment and possible cure for hepatitis B, have been halted by the company. The trials were being carried out at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Md., and at sites in Galveston and Boston.
