OBIT CARICO, CLAUDE FRANKLIN

CARICO, Claude Franklin, 84, of Roanoke, died Monday, July 5, 1993. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Hayes Carico; two daughters and sons-in-law, Jane Carico Cobb and Herbert H. Cobb Jr., Springfield, TN, Elizabeth Carico Peek and David E. Peek II, Richmond, Va.; four grandchildren, Amanda Cobb Ragan and husband, Jack Merritt Ragan III, Greensboro, N.C., Holley Taft Cobb, Raleigh, N.C. and Richard Keith Peek and Elizabeth Buchanan Peek, both of Richmond, Va.; a brother, A. Benjamin Carico, Galax, Va.; and four sisters, Susie Carico Weatherman, and Melissa Carico Glasco, both of Galax, Va., Emma Carico Jones, Greensboro, N.C., and Lula Carico Robertson, Sparta, Mi.; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Upon finishing college in 1930, he joined Webster Brick Company as head of accounting. In 1933 he was transferred to sales and in 1935 was elected Vice President and Sales Manager. In 1944 he was appointed General Sales Manager. He retired from Webster Brick Company in 1975. He joined Raleigh Court Presbyterian Church by profession of faith and baptism January 6, 1935, was ordained a deacon in 1938, and elder in 1952. He served as a Sunday School teacher, as Superintendent of the Sunday School class, as treasurer of the church for many years and Elder Emeritus. He served on the board of the Presbyterian Children's Home for many years and Chairman of the Board for two years. He served on the Board and was Vice Chairman of Westminister-Canterbury of Lynchburg. He served on numerous church and community fund raising campaigns to include the Presbyterian Children's Home, Westminister-Canterbury, and the Science Museum of Western Virginia. In addition to serving as Vice President of the Clean Valley Committee and treasurer of the Science Museum of Western Virginia, he made it possible for five young people, outside of his immediate family, to attend college. He was a member of Rotary Club and a Mason for over fifty years, a member of Virginia Heights Lodge #324 AF & AM, Roanoke Consistory of Scottish Rite Bodies and Kazim Temple. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 8, 1993 at Raleigh Court Presbyterian Church with the Reverends Dr. F. Tupper Garden, Dr. James A. Allison, Jr., Dr. J. Harris Stephens and Dr. Jerry Newbold officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Burial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Presbyterian Children's Home in Lynchburg, Va. or Raleigh Court Presbyterian Church.
