IN SCHOOL

KATHERINE HOFFMAN, assistant professor of English at Roanoke College, has been chosen to participate in the National Endowment for the Humanities 1993 Summer Institute for College and University Faculty at Northwestern University. She will be one of 25 faculty members examining Italian literature, history and art from 1494-1527.

\ VALLEY METRO has announced the names of the winners in its third annual student poster contest.

Winners between the ages 10 and 13 were: Ross McDermott, West Salem Elementary, first place; Lauren Willis, James Madison Middle School, second place; Shannon Hobson, Northside Junior High School, honorable mention.

Winners between the ages 14 and 18 were: Lisa Huffman and Larry Wilson, Arnold R. Burton Technology Center, first place; Dion Minter, Roanoke Valley Christian Schools, second place; Erica Winstead, Arnold R. Burton Technology Center, honorable mention.

All entries were recently on public display in the Campbell Court Transportation Center during National Transit Week.

\ MARY LOU'S FITNESS CLUB, one of nine Education First programs sponsored by Hills department stores, recently awarded gold medals to 22 students from two Roanoke Valley schools.

Students from Fairview Elementary were: Matthew Blevins, Brandon Bodine, James Hannah, Darell Hodnett, Vincent Pinkney, Matthew Potts, Orren Prunty, Kevin Saunders, Norman Short, Ronald Taylor, Ross Scott, Crystal Barnett, Tanya Caldwell, Timica Campbell, Guinevera Jordan, Adrian Leftwich, Audrey Weikel.

Students from Oak Grove Elementary were: Kyle Singleton, Kerri Zeigler, Amanda Pettyman, Debra Crites, Animesh Jain.

Participating students promised to eat one extra serving of fruits and vegetables per week and exercise one day each week instead of watching television. The program lasted for five months.

\ ELIZABETH BARTRAM WAFLE, daughter of Ferris Bligh Wafle of Roanoke, was named to the spring semester dean's list at the University of South Carolina in Columbia.
