A preliminary investigation indicates the deaths were a murder-suicide, he said. But authorities would not release details of the case until they have the results of autopsies from the state medical examiner's office in Roanoke.
Trula Mae Fields and Fred Fields, both 45, were found near their Dante home in a car parked along Virginia 63 about 5 a.m. Wednesday, said Investigator J.R. Lockhart of the county Sheriff's Office.
They were taken to the Russell County Medical Center, where they died a short time later, Lockhart said.
"All preliminary indications are that there had been a long-term domestic dispute, and this was apparently the climax of that dispute," Lockhart said.
