LIBRARY RECOMMENDATION ON AGENDA

The architect hired to provide a preliminary design for a new Blacksburg branch library will make a recommendation to the Montgomery County Board of Supervisors Monday night whether to build a new library or remodel the current building on Draper Road.

At a June 28 meeting, architect Richard Fitts of Design Collaborative, a Tidewater Virginia firm, said he was considering three options for a new library in Blacksburg

Those options were:

Demolish the existing building and build a new one.

Build a new library but save the existing building for some other use.

Extensively renovate the existing library, including adding an addition.

Fitts, who has consulted with community groups, will offer his recommendation among those options Monday.

In other action Monday, the board will:

Receive a request from the Montgomery-Floyd Regional Library Board that the library be allowed to proceed with a $165,000 automation project.

Hear a request from Sheriff Ken Phipps for the board to fund two jailers' jobs through this fiscal year, which just began this month, rather than funding four jobs through the end of October as the board had already agreed. The supervisors would need to appropriate another $24,411 to fund these two full-time positions for the full year.
