DRUG-STUDY PATIENT RECEIVES NEW LIVER

A third patient who received a new liver after adverse reactions to an experimental drug is in critical condition after an 8 1/2-hour operation Friday, hospital officials said.

The 37-year-old woman had the liver transplant at the University of Virginia Medical Center.

Two other patients who had taken the same drug died this week after receiving transplants.

All three were part of a National Institutes of Health study of a new drug to treat hepatitis B. - Associated Press
