MCKNIGHT SHARES LEAD IN TOURNAMENT

Tom McKnight and Garrett Smyth hold the lead going into today's title playoff in the 37th annual Eastern Amateur golf tournament in Portsmouth.

The two are tied with 54-hole scores of 8-under-par 202.

McKnight, from Galax, added a 2-under 68 to rounds of 69 and 65 that had given him the 36-hole lead. His round got an early boost from a hole-in-one on the par-3, 143-yard sixth hole.

Smyth, of Lookout Mountain, Tenn., and Kelly Mitchum, a North Carolina State player, carded rounds of 3-under 67 at Elizabeth Manor on Saturday. Mitchum is a shot back at 203.

Defending champion David Howser dropped out of contention with a 78. His 219 was 17 shots off the lead.
