`TRAVELGATE' REVEALS A ROTTEN CORE

REGARDING the July 2 front-page article in the Roanoke Times & World-News entitled "Travel office firings wrong, report admits":

The article really made me angry! Seven long-term employees were summarily dismissed without a right of appeal, and the office was turned over to a distant cousin of President Clinton. The White House charged the fired employees with "gross mismanagement" and "possible criminal behavior" and brought the Federal Bureau of Investigation into the case. The fired employees' reputations were smeared by all the media publicity.

After all the public furor, the White House review of the bungled mess finds some "management deficiencies," and the end result is that "no one [on the White House staff] will be asked to resign or change jobs as a result of the review."

This is not simply a case of the White House being out of touch with the electorate. It unequivocally demonstrates that the Clinton administration is rotten to the core. MAXWELL J. DYETT MONETA
