POLICE GIVE NAME OF MAN WHO DIED ON RIVER MONDAY

Police have released the name of the man who died after falling from his boat Monday into the New River near Radford.

John Henry Carraway, 66, of Dublin, was fishing from a small boat with his wife when he fell into the water shortly after noon, authorities said.

It is unclear whether he drowned, had a heart attack or some other medical problem. Sgt. C.C. Thornton of the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office said foul play was not suspected and an autopsy would not be performed.

Carraway was not wearing a life jacket, although two were in the boat, said Lt. Steve Vinson of the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries. One of the jackets would not have met state standards because it was a child's size.

The man was pulled from the water below Claytor Lake Dam at about 12:35 p.m. and was taken to Radford Community Hospital by Christiansburg Rescue Squad.
