Five pitchers from the West, starting and ending with a pair of Virginia High entries, allowed the East only three hits and a two-out ninth-inning run.
"Those guys threw better than anyone I've caught, but I knew they could do that," said Carroll County's Kevin DeHaven, who shared catching duties with Vince Whorley of Jefferson Forest.
L.J. Yankosky of West Springfield supplied most of the offense. He drilled three singles and knocked in the first four runs as the extra hitter in this all-star game.
"I was supposed to pitch, but I've had this arm problem," he said.
The West's most valuable player was drafted in the 18th round by the Minnesota Twins and signed with Georgia Tech.
"Right now it looks as if I'll be going to college," Yankosky said. "[Tech] promised to look at me as a hitter, so I hope I'll do some designated hitting."
Virginia High's Shawn Fouch opened with three scoreless innings to get the victory. Kevin Barker, also of Virginia High, pitched the last two innings. In between, Keith Cassedy of Woodbridge and Seth Greisinger of McLean dazzled the East with near perfect control.
For the game, West pitchers walked only three and struck out 12.
The only Timesland players to reach base for the West were William Byrd shortstop Gary Wiggins and Fort Chiswell outfielder B.W. Hill. Both walked.
Wiggins' sixth-inning walk pushed G.W. Danville's Omar Venable to second and Yankosky singled him home. Hill walked to lead off the ninth and he scored on a fielder's choice by Halifax County's Archie Bohanon for the last West run.
