COMMUNITY CANNING GETTING UNDER WAY

Community canneries are the quickest and safest way to can fresh produce and vegetables. There is a one-time membership fee of $5 and a processing fee of 15 cents per container processed. Apple butter will cost $1 per gallon processed.

Safety regulations must be followed, and small children should not be brought to the canneries. Use of the canneries is by appointment only, and assistance with food preparation will be available.

The Blacksburg Community Cannery will begin operating July 20 and will be open every Tuesday and Thursday until Oct. 15 and one day per week between Oct. 15 and Nov. 4. To make an appointment, call Denise Turner at 731-1835 or Blacksburg Middle School on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 552-2401.

The Auburn Community Cannery will be open to the public starting July 21 and will operate every Wednesday and Friday until Oct. 15. The cannery will be open one day per week between Oct. 15 and Nov. 5.
