\ A pacemaker designed for humans has Magnum the Doberman pinscher back on his feet.
The 9-year-old dog with a fatal heart ailment underwent a 2 1/2-hour operation in which the oblong electronic device was placed in his abdomen.
"He's more alert and sharp-looking," said owner Irene Sintow, of Coral Springs, Fla., who cooks chicken and noodles without salt for her recovering pet. "He's not huffing and puffing like he was." The pacemaker, donated by the manufacturer, saved Magnum's life by regulating an abnormal heart rhythm, said Dr. Lloyd Meisels of Coral Springs Animal Hospital.
