DEATH TOLL REACHES 146 AFTER QUAKE

Relatives broke down in tears on Friday as a ferry boat departed for a crematorium with 39 bodies recovered from Japan's deadliest earthquake in nearly half a century.

Japan is the world's most earthquake-prone nation, and the death toll from Monday's temblor, which unleashed devastating tidal wives and massive avalanches in the north, climbed to 146. Workers continued the search for bodies. At least 117 people were missing.

A seismic expert, meanwhile, said a wave that ravaged the tiny island of Okushiri in the Sea of Japan may have been up to 100 feet high at one point. - Associated Press
