CARTER MACHINERY RETIREE DIES

Howard G. Worthy Jr., who was an officer of Carter Machinery Co. in Salem until he retired in 1980, died Thursday. He was 70.

Worthy, a native of Georgetown, Ga., moved to Roanoke in 1952 when he began work at Carter as secretary-treasurer. He retired in 1980 as secretary-treasurer and executive vice president.

After he retired, Worthy served as office manager of the Hazlegrove, Dickenson, Rea, Smeltzer & Brown law firm; a volunteer for the Service Corps of Retired Executives; and president of McIlhanny Equipment Co.

He also was a captain in the Air Force, a member of the Cave Spring Masonic Lodge, a president of the Optimist Club, a Shriner, and a deacon and former Sunday school teacher at First Baptist Church.

Worthy is survived by his wife, Katherine H. Worthy; two sons, Howard G. Worthy III and Clark H. Worthy; and a sister, Joyce Anderson. The funeral will be today at noon at Oakey's South Chapel.
