Dr. Elizabeth Lee, a VAS board member on the committee chosen to nominate a replacement for Ken King, said "in all probability" she will recommend David Paxton.
Paxton, also a board member, said he wants to find out the board's feelings about the future of the Commonwealth Games of Virginia before he takes the volunteer job.
VAS, a Roanoke-based non-profit organization, bills itself as promoting "the development of amateur athletics in our state." It does that primarily by running the nationally sanctioned Commonwealth Games, which have been staged in Roanoke since the first event in 1990.
One faction in Virginia amateur athletics believes the Games should rotate throughout the state.
"I would like to see the Games stay here for a while. I'm not saying we would never move them. There are a number of things [I want to know] about the direction the board wants to go," Paxton said. "If I'm comfortable with that, I probably would [take it]."
King, who has agreed to work with the new executive director through the end of the year, endorsed Paxton, as did Lee. They cited his commitment to athletics and his legal background.
"His personality lends itself to the kind of leadership the board of directors looks for," King said. "He knows the people here. He's a native son of the Roanoke Valley."
