2 companies file in bankruptcy court

Two Roanoke Valley companies filed petitions this week in U.S. Bankruptcy Court for Western Virginia:

Oaktree Cabinets Inc., a Roanoke County maker and installer of cabinets, filed for protection from creditors during reorganization. Its president was listed as Robert A. Brumfield. Assets were listed at between $50,000 and $99,000 and liabilities between $100,000 and $499,000.

Richard Doyle Ewing and Janet Gail Webber, operating a sole proprietorship as Janet Ewing in Roanoke, filed for liquidation. Their business, which demonstrates and sells eyeglass cleaner in stores, estimates assets and liabilities as less than $50,000. - Staff report

\ Tultex subsidiary gets Logo 7 license

Tultex Corp., Martinsville fleece-wear maker, said its Logo 7 subsidiary has a four-year license to produce NFL Pro Line sportswear under its Logo Athletic brand name.

Logo 7 will market products for 28 NFL teams and provide on-field garments for three teams: the Phoenix Cardinals, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Los Angeles Rams. - Staff report

\ Bank branches reopen at Krogers

NBC Bank opened six branches Friday in Western Virginia Kroger supermarkets, operations previously run as Dominion Bank's Money Markets.

The event was marked by a ribbon-cutting at noon at the Tanglewood Mall Kroger store. Other branches are at Lakeside Plaza, Ridgewood Farms, Cave Spring Corners, Lake Drive Plaza and University Mall in Blacksburg. It is Memphis-based National Commerce Bancorporation's first entry into Virginia.

Banking hours at the branches will be 10 a.m.-7 p.m. weekdays and 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturdays. - Staff report

\ New York Fed has new president

William J. McDonough on Friday was named president of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, to succeed E. Gerald Corrigan on Monday. The president of the New York Fed is traditionally the most influential among the 12 Federal Reserve presidents.

McDonough has been executive vice president of the New York Fed's financial markets group and manager of open market operations for the Federal Reserve System's Federal Open Market Committee. His appointment was confirmed Friday by the Federal Reserve's Board of Governors. - Staff report

\ Mercedes recalls 128,000 vehicles

Mercedes-Benz of North America on Friday announced a voluntary recall of about 128,000 vehicles to replace a connector for the throttle cable. Included are 1987 through 1992 300-Class models with five- and six-cylinder engines.

Owners of the recalled vehicles are asked to contact the nearest authorized dealer. An improved connector will be installed at no charge to the owner. The installation takes about 20 minutes. - Staff report
