OBIT POPE, MADGE ELIZABETH HELDRETH

POPE, Madge Elizabeth Heldreth, 81, of Smithfield, N.C., formerly of Ivanhoe, died Friday, July 16, 1993, in the Wythe County Community Hospital. She was born in Wythe County, the daughter of the late Frank Brown and Lula Bell Vaught Heldreth. She was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church, D.A.R. and was a school teacher in the Wythe County School System for 30 years. She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Sandra Lee and Dr. Thomas M. Johnson of Smithfield, N.C. and Patricia and John Phillippi of Wytheville; two sons and daughters-in-law, Herman A. and Barbara Simpson Pope of Houston, Texas and James B. and Bonnie Pope of Max Meadows; two sisters, Ruth H. Yancey of Harrisonburg and Patsy H. Jones of Galax; nine grandchildren, Dr. Andrew Johnson of Toledo, Ohio, David A. Johnson of Clayton, N.C., Elizabeth Louise Pope, Angela Nell Pope, Rebecca Carrol Pope, Michael Alexander Pope, all of Houston, Texas, James Samuel Pope, Meridith Pope Phillippi, Sandra Lee Phillippi, all of Wytheville. Funeral services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at St. John's Episcopal Church with the Rev. Laurie McAlpine officiating. Interment will follow in West End Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Barnett Funeral Home Sunday from 7 to 8 p.m. The family suggests that those who prefer to may make memorials to St. John's Episcopal Church or the Lead Mines Rescue Squad. Barnett Funeral Home in Wytheville is in charge of arrangements.
