SWEEPING ATT RATE INCREASE BEFORE FCC

AT&T announced rate increases on Monday averaging 3.9 percent for most business services but less than 1 percent for direct-dialed domestic calls by consumers. The increases will become effective Aug. 1 if approved by the Federal Communications Commission.

The changes are dramatic, affecting most of AT&T's interstate and international services, 800 services and for data communications.

The company says the rate boosts are part of its efforts "to ensure that prices reflect expenses." For direct-dialed consumer calls domestically, increases would apply only to calls made for certain distances both daytime and in the evening. Rates on other evening calls would decrease, AT&T said. - Associated Press
