The consumer price index rose from 144.2 points in May to 144.4 in June, a barely perceptable shift.

The national measure of the cost of consumer goods was up about 3 percent from last June's 140.2, however. So far this year, the rise is running at an annualized rate of 3.1 percent.

Statistics added this week to the Roanoke Valley Economic Indicators show:

The value of building permits rose from $9,126,513 in June 1992 to $11,013,183 this year, an increase of 20.6 percent.

Most of the activity was in Roanoke County, which issued permits worth $5.6 million compared to about $2.7 million each in Roanoke and Salem.

Roanoke County issued a $1 million permit for an office for Jefferson National Forest Association at Valleypointe office park.

The number of building permits was up from 469 last year to 561 last month.

Passenger boardings at Roanoke Regional Airport were off 11.17 percent from last year, but the amount of cargo loaded rose 12.18 percent.
