FIRE DAMAGES HOME IN SOUTHWEST ROANOKE

A Southwest Roanoke home was damaged Monday by a fire that officials believe started when an electrical circuit shorted out.

David and Jewell Davis said they heard a loud pop in the basement of their Westover Avenue home shortly before 10 p.m. David Davis said he went to the door leading to the basement and smelled smoke. He called 911.

Davis said he was puzzled about what caused the fire. A basement furnace was not on, he said.

The couple - who got out of the house without injury, as did their cat, Molly - have lived in the house for 20 years, Davis said.

Capt. Ralph Tartaglia of the Roanoke City Fire Department said the fire caused $20,000 worth of smoke and heat damage to the house and $10,000 to its contents.

The fire was under investigation by the Roanoke fire marshal.
