OBIT CARTER, ADRIENNE GOODWIN
CARTER, Adrienne Goodwin, 93, of Salem, passed away Monday, July 19, 1993,
at her residence after a brief illness. She was preceded in death by John
Hurley Carter, her devoted husband of 53 years. Mrs. Carter was the daughter
of the late Luther B. Goodwin and Margaret Kinsley Goodwin. She was born
September 16, 1899, and received her early education in Roanoke County. She
was a graduate of Salem High School; attended Radford University and graduated
from James Madison University. Mrs. Carter's graduate work was done at
Columbia University and the University of Maryland. She taught Home Economics
for many years in Virginia and Maryland. She was a member of College
Evangelical Lutheran Church, Salem, Va., Order of the Eastern Star, Oakland,
Md. for more than 50 years and was currently a member of the Salem Chapter
#161. Until very recently, Mrs. Carter was an active member of the Salem
Senior Citizens Club. She held various offices in the 49ers Plus Club; chaired
many fund-raising projects; taught crafts and worked diligently with Salem's
government leaders; and the League of Older Americans; planning and securing
funds for a new senior citizens building on Union Street. Highlighting her
Presidency in 1976, were the many programs in observance of our Bicentennial,
celebrating our American Heritage. She is survived by a niece and a nephew.
Her special neighbors, Harold and Shirley Horn; many friends and other
relatives also mourn her passing. Adrienne Carter was a lady of great dignity
and strength. Those who ministered to her during her final days will remember
her courage and faith as she faced and accepted her illness. In lieu of
flowers, memorials may be made to Good Samaritan Hospice, 4235 Colonial
Avenue, Roanoke, Va., 24018. Funeral services will be conducted at noon,
Wednesday, July 21, 1993, at Lotz Salem Chapel, with the Rev. Dwayne J.
Westermann and the Rev. Robert R. Ward officiating. Graveside services to
follow at Sherwood Memorial Park conducted by the Order of the Eastern Star,
Salem Chapter #161. Friends may call at Lotz Salem Chapel after noon on
Tuesday.
