HEPATITIS B PATIENT UNDERGOES TRANSPLANT

A 63-year-old man who became ill after taking an experimental drug for hepatitis B underwent a liver transplant Monday at the University of Virginia Medical Center.

The man was in critical condition, which is standard after a transplant, said Marguerite Beck, a hospital spokeswoman.

A 37-year-old woman who had a liver transplant July 9 after taking the drug improved from critical to serious condition Sunday, Beck said.

Both patients took the drug fialuridine, also called FIAU. They are among 15 patients who were given the drug in a National Institutes of Health trial. The study was halted June 30 when 10 patients became ill.
