WOMAN WINS BACK PAY IN PREGNANCY LAWSUIT

A woman who was fired illegally from her job as a groom at a horse stable because she was pregnant has won more than $23,000 in back pay.

The award is a result of a lawsuit filed in U.S. District court by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission on behalf of Michele Ruiz, who worked at Stable Beau Shane in Mathews from July 1988 until her termination in April 1989.

The stable's owner, Ecurie Alford Ltd. was ordered to pay Ruiz $23,207. Ruiz, who has worked around horses most of her life, said the firing was traumatic for her family because she had to give up a furnished house at the stable and borrow money to move into another home.
