DRIVER `FEELING PRETTY GOOD'

Malcolm Fink, the Roanoke driver who suffered a heart attack while racing at the New River Valley Speedway on Saturday night, said he expected to leave Roanoke Memorial Hospital by Saturday.

Fink, who competes in the Late Model Stock Car division, was taken out of the hospital's coronary care unit Tuesday night and is in a private room.

"I'm feeling pretty good," he said Wednesday over the telephone from his room. "It [the heart attack] would've killed a normal person, but I reckon I'm not normal."

Fink, 45, said the heart attack occurred halfway through the 200-lap Late Model feature in Radford.

"Somewhere around the 100th lap, I felt tight pains in my left arm and chest," he said. "I radioed in but couldn't get an answer, so I finally came in on my own. I knew it was something bad."

Fink said he hoped to return to the track this season.

"I'm going to try to race," he said. "It depends on what the doctors say."
