MAIL HANDLING CHANGES COULD SAVE $300,000

Gov. Douglas Wilder said Wednesday he expects to save at least $300,000 a year by combining the mail processing operations of several state departments.

Under the new centralized system, the Departments of Taxation, Motor Vehicles, Social Services and Treasury and the Virginia Retirement System have combined operations.

The departments generate about 20 million pieces of mail each year. By using new technology at a central location, Wilder said he expects to be able to process first-class mail at reduced postage rates.

The Treasury Department was chosen as the location for the centralized system because it already has the staff and space to handle a large volume of mail, said Ronald Tillett, state treasurer.
