VA. ARTS COMMISSION OKS GRANTS FOR VALLEY

The Virginia Commission for the Arts has approved grants totaling more than $1.4 million, with several thousand dollars awarded in the New River Valley.

The towns of Radford, Pulaski and Narrows and the county of Pulaski received Local Government Challenge Grants of $2,230 each. The localities match the grants dollar for dollar or higher and re-award the funds to arts organizations in their jurisdictions.

David Rigsbee and Midge Eisele each received $4,000 for writing projects. Rigsbee has been an instructor in the Virginia Tech English department. Eisele, a former instructor in the English department at Virginia Tech, has accepted a writing fellowship at Stanford University. These Individual Artist Project Grants are designed to support the creation of new works by established and emerging Virginia artists.

DiscoveryWorks and the Fine Arts Center for the New River Valley in Pulaski were each awarded $2,800 grants for general operating support. Funds in this category are intended to continue, strengthen and expand their programs.
