RELIGION BRIEFS

COLONIAL BIBLE INSTITUTE, a ministry of Colonial Baptist Church at Blue Ridge, is open for registration. The first classes will begin Friday at 7 p.m. The institute offers a diploma in general Bible studies for those who complete a three-year course in Old and New Testament and Christian history from conservative Christian perspective.

A certificate also is available for those who complete a year of selected courses. A nursery. Call 977-5683 for more information.

\ THE REV. RUDY JONES, a graduate of William Byrd High School, will become minister of children, youth and activities at Oakland Baptist Church on Aug. 8. He succeeds the Rev. Michael Woody, who became pastor of Buchanan Baptist Church nine months ago.

Jones, 37, is coming from a similar position at First Baptist Church in Manteo, N.C. A specialist in recreational leadership, he was educated at Carson-Newman College and Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary.

\ ST. PAUL LUTHERAN CHURCH, 4909 North Lake Drive N.W., has scheduled vacation Bible school Aug. 2-6. Sessions will be from 9 a.m. to noon for children 3 through the sixth-grade level. To register, call 562-0511 or 562-1242.

\ ELDER HARRY SHARLEY, formerly of Salem, will speak Saturday at 11 a.m. at North Valley Seventh-day Adventist Church. Sharley, now of Wytheville, is a former pastor of the Salem Adventist congregation. Lunch will follow the service. The congregation uses St. Paul Lutheran Church at 4909 North Lake Drive N.W. for its services.

\ MOUNT MORIAH BAPTIST CHURCH, 3521 Orange Ave. N.E., has scheduled homecoming Sunday with two services planned. An 11 a.m. worship will be led by the new pastor, the Rev. Thomas Pleasant, and the choir of Amsterdam Baptist Church at Daleville. Guest leaders at 3 p.m. will be the Rev. J.R. Hughes and the choir of Bent Mountain Baptist Church.

\ THE 2OTH ANNIVERSARY of the coming of the Rev. Kenneth B. Wright to First Baptist Church on North Jefferson Street will be observed beginning Aug. 5 with a 7 p.m. concert. The following day at 6:30 p.m. the congregation will honor the pastor at a buffet dinner. The celebration continues on Aug. 8 with a service at 11 a.m.

During Wright's pastorate, the church relocated within the Gainsboro area to 310 North Jefferson St.

\ PILGRIM BAPTIST CHURCH, 1415 Eighth St. N.W., plans a Smurf and Tom Thumb wedding program Sunday at 6 p.m.

\ THE PARADISE GOSPEL CHORUS is sponsoring a program Aug. 1 at Greater Mount Zion Baptist Church, 1810 Grayson Ave. N.W. Featured will be the Rev. J. Eugene Young, pastor of Jerusalem Baptist Church, and the Rev. Dwight Steele, pastor of Pilgrim Baptist Church.

\ WOMEN'S AGLOW FELLOWSHIP'S day group will hear a Salem woman, Linda Carper, speak on "Life Without Bars" at its meeting Wednesday. \ ST. PHILIP EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN CHURCH, which recently occupied its new facility at 8115 Williamson Road near Hollins College, will hold vacation Bible school Aug. 9-13, 6:30-8:30 p.m. Classes will be offered for ages 3 through sixth grade, as well as for adults. \ JERUSALEM BAPTIST CHURCH is observing the 11th anniversary of the coming of the Rev. J. Eugene Young as its pastor. Tonight, the Rev. Joseph Keaton of Central Baptist will preach, and the Friday guest will be the Rev. E.T. Burton of Sweet Union Baptist. Both services will start at 8.

Two services also are planned Sunday. The Rev. George Hamilton, chaplain at the Salem Veterans Affairs Medical Center, preaches at 11 a.m. and at 3:30 p.m. worship will be led by the Rev. Dwight Steele and singers from Pilgrim Baptist Church.
