ALLEN, FARRIS SAY STOP AT BENEFIT WAS INNOCENT

Statewide Republican candidates George Allen and Michael Farris said they did not know in advance that a campaign stop was a benefit for a private all-white school.

Both expressed surprise and some embarrassment when told that Wednesday's 14th Annual Amelia Beef Festival would raise from $30,000 to $60,000 for the school, which was founded in 1964 for white students when Amelia County schools were forced to desegregate.

"I didn't know any of this," gubernatorial candidate Allen said. "To me, it's just a good way to meet a lot of people." Farris, a lawyer for home-schooling advocates and candidate for lieutenant governor, said, "Sometimes you walk in blind, and apparently I have." - Associated Press
