FCS DRIVER CONFIRMS BROKEN LEG

It was confirmed Sunday that driver George Spangler broke his leg in a collision with the wall Saturday during the Late Model Stock Car race at Franklin County Speedway.

"It's the bone just below the kneecap," Spangler said from his home in Floyd.

The radiator hose of Spangler's 1986 Mustang burst just as he entered turn 1 of lap 48.

"When the water got on my wheels, I just took off toward the wall," he said. "My left foot was on the brake, and I guess the force of hitting the wall was enough to break my leg."

He was taken by ambulance to Roanoke Memorial Hospital for treatment. Spangler, who is expected to be out 6-8 weeks, said his car was totaled. Spangler, 30, has been racing for 14 years. He has won two points championships (Limited Sportsman in 1982, and Late Model in 1986).

The official scorer at FCS changed Bobby Radford's finish in the Late Model race from fourth to eighth. A question had come up when Radford pitted briefly during a caution period. With the change, Rick Sigmon, Dicky Wilson and Todd Philpott all moved up a notch.

In the late races Saturday night, defending Rookie points champion Frank Church won his first race of 1993. Gary Clifton was second, and Jimmy Wilson, third in Rookie points, was third.

Jennifer Slaughter captured the special 10-lap "Powder Puff" contest, and Dean Sutphin won the Any Car finale.

Flip Groggins of Fincastle drove to his fourth SCCA GT-1 win of the year Sunday at Charlotte (N.C.) Motor Speedway. Groggins' Oldsmobile Cutlass started on the pole and led all 21 laps en route to an 18-second win over John Miller of Nashville, Tenn. By winning, Groggins has clinched the SCCA's Southeast Division championship and has qualified for the SCCA's National Championships to be held Oct. 17 at Road Atlanta.
