Elders' statement is only one of many gross misconceptions for which she is culpable. Is there a specific pro-life couple or person not prepared to adopt a specific baby now in its mother's uterus? Almost certainly there is, but that is not the question. The question is: "Are there thousands of pro-life families prepared and eager to provide homes for babies born to mothers unable to function as mothers?" Yes, and to those families can be added thousands of pro-choice families whose better instincts cause them to crave the joy of parenting.
Clinton and Elders should focus their political and professional energies on the preservation of unborn life, and that focus ought to be joined with efforts to encourage adoption. Efforts could range from reforming the content of the counsel given to women in crisis pregnancies to a change in tax laws that would make adoption expenses deductible.
My wife and I are parents of a child who was conceived, grew and preserved in someone else's uterus. My daughter is our third child, and is the gift of God to us via adoption. She is not white but Hispanic, with beautiful, dark brown skin. In fact, with all her time in the summer sun, she is very close in skin color to Elders. She would find my daughter delightful, just as she could thousands of unborn children whose lives she could help save. RANY PIZZINO ROCKY MOUNT
