BOLLING IN HUNT AT STATE AMATEUR

Fran Hensley of Ridgeway fired a 6-over 77 Monday to capture medalist honors in the 65th annual Virginia Women's State Amateur at Hot Springs.

Hensley was one shot better than Sherry Zaleski of Manassas and Dot Bolling of Roanoke.

The women begin match play today on the Homestead's par-71 Cascade course, with the 18-hole championship Friday.

Hensley, Bolling and Zaleski were the only players in the field of 51 to break 80.

At 81, were Juanita Petrone of Blacksburg and Meg Gilmer of Charlottesville.

In the 36th annual Women's Senior Amateur, Audry Najjum of Roanoke won her fifth medalist honor with a 77. Najjum is a three-time winner of the Senior Amateur. Roma Stverack of Roanoke (87) and Helen Watson of Staunton (89) also made the championship flight.

In other area golf:

Salem's David Johnson and Shane Brackin of Providence, N.C., shot even-par 72s Monday to lead the boys' 16-18 age division after the first round of the Smith Mountain Lake Junior Golf Invitational at The Waterfront Country Club near Moneta.

Faber Jamerson of Appomattox was two shots back at 74 and Roanoke's Ryan Ketron, an age division winner last year, shot 75.

In the girls' division, 1991 champion Shelley Scruggs fired an 84 and shared the lead with Susan McArthur of Critz. Mandy Martin of Richmond was one shot back.

Roanoke's Brian Whitaker opened with a 74 and leads Mark Sweeney of Troutville by one stroke in the boys' 13-15 age division. Nick Varney, an age division winner last year from Roanoke, was at 76 along with Shane Foster of Earlysville.

Mike Merolla of Richmond leads the 12-and under division. His 39 over nine holes was two strokes better than Trey Clower of Roanoke.
