The step was made possible by the abrupt resignation last week of Rhea E. Saltz from the at-large seat on the School Board. The supervisors approved a motion by Bruce Fariss to do away with the at-large seat altogether instead of appointing someone to fill it.
Saltz, who had one year left on his term, delivered his brief letter of resignation personally to County Administrator Joseph Morgan. It gave no reason for his resignation.
In 1995, based on a referendum passed in Pulaski County last year, the supervisors will no longer appoint School Board members. Instead, voters in each of the county's five magisterial districts will elect one member to the School Board, a change that will eliminate the at-large seat.
The supervisors also delayed until their August meeting a decision on further participation in a regional jail study.
Wythe, Pulaski, Giles and Floyd counties and Radford had already funded a required needs-assessment study, but the 1993 General Assembly changed the rules, requiring more data from another study.
Assistant Pulaski County Administrator Peter Huber and Sheriff Ralph Dobbins will compare costs of an improved county jail and a regional jail. Pulaski County will also recommend that the funding formula be based on the population of the jurisdiction, rather than the number of prisoners it houses.
