BOLLING IN CHASE FOR TITLE

Salem's Dot Bolling remained on a roll in 65th Virginia Women's State Amateur golf tournament on Tuesday at the Cascades Course in Hot Springs.

Bolling, who won last week's Roanoke City-County women's title and was second in qualifying here on Monday, thrashed Roanoke's Judy Knight 6 and 4 Tuesday to advance to today's second round of match play.

The two other Southwestern Virginians to make the championship flight - qualifying medalist Fran Hensley of Ridgeway and Juanita Petrone of Blacksburg - also won their matches. Hensley dispatched Jessica Adams 4 and 2, and Petrone defeated Nancy Parvin of Midlothian 3 and 2.

Defending champion Jane Mack played par golf in a 4-and-3 victory over Karen Ryder of Charlottesville.

Mack, a four-time winner, faces fellow Richmond resident Margaret Balch, a 2-and-1 winner over Portsmouth's Bambi Yoder, today.

Sherry Zaleski of Manassas and Natalie Easterly of Richmond were the final two victors in the championship flight.

In the 36th Virginia Women's State Senior, being played at the nearby Homestead course, qualifying medalist Audrey Najjum of Roanoke was the only Southwestern Virginian to survive the first round of match play. Najjum, a three-time champion in the event, defeated Martha Smith of Virginia Beach, 2-up.

In other championship flight senior matches involving area players, Suffolk's Mary Helen Rawls nipped Roanoke's Roma Stverak 1-up and Marie Winks of Lynchburg eliminated Norma Lemon of Alleghany, 3 and 2.

Kay Schiefelbein of Alexandria, gunning for her third consecutive title, matched par over the 11 holes she needed to rout Betty Barco of Virginia Beach, 8 and 7. Schiefelbein will play 1988 winner Marie Winks of Lynchburg, a 3-and-2 winner over Norma Lemon of Covington.

In other golf:

Roanoke's Ryan Ketron added a 73 to his opening round of 75 and won the boys' 16-18 age division title at the Smith Mountain Lake Junior Golf Invitational at the Waterfront Country Club near Moneta.

Ketron, who will be a senior at William Byrd, won the 16-17 age division last year with a score of 141. He said the addition of 18-year-olds made the competition a little tougher.

"There were more good players in it," he said. "I didn't shoot as good as last year, but ended up winning it."

Brandon Scruggs of Gretna shot a 74 to finish second at 151.

Mark Sweeney of Troutville had the lowest score of the tournament, winning the boys' 13-15 age division with rounds of 75 and 72 for a 147. Salem's Nick Varney was second (76-72-148) followed by Justin Young of Roanoke (78-76-154).

Mike Merolla of Richmond smoked the boys' 12-and-under field with an 18-hole total of 80. Roanoke's Trey Clower was second at 89 followed by defending champion Lee Taylor of Roanoke at 91.

Susan McArthur of Critz won the girls' open title with rounds of 84-81 for a 165 total. Shelley Scruggs, the 1991 champion, was second at 168 and 1992 champ Danielle Ware was third at 171.

Lynchburg's Jamie Angel shot a 1-under-par 71 at Water's Edge Country Club in Penhook to pace Roanoke-area qualifying for the VSGA Mid-Amateur men's championship to be held at Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in Manassas on Aug. 20-22. Bedford's Jim Stanley Jr., Blacksburg's David Chalmers and Lynchburg's Art Costan tied for second at 73. Thirty-six players attempted to qualify for 13 spots. Other area players who qualified included:

Mike Smith (Roanoke Country Club), 74; Jeff Lynch (Roanoke Country Club) 74; Bruce Heterick (Virginia Tech Golf Club) 74; Joe Paljug (London Downs) 75; Charlie Turner (Hidden Valley) 75; Ted Comer (Hanging Rock) 76; John Nichols (Bedford Country Club) 76; J.W. Entsminger (Lexington Country Club) 76.
