The victory was the 10th in a row for North Roanoke, counting district and state tournament play. North Roanoke led 7-3 going into bottom of sixth inning. Botetourt rallied with three runs and had the potential tying run on first when the final out was made on a groundout to first.
Jenell Holler pitched a complete-game, striking out seven, allowing seven hits and walking five. North Roanoke had eight hits; Holler went 3-for-3 and was the only Roanoke player with more than one hit.
In Baton Rouge, La., Meredith Bowden of the Roanoke Valley Amateur Track and Field Club is in 19th place after the first day of competition in the heptathlon at the USA Track and Field Junior Olympics National Championships. Athletes competed in steamy weather, with a heat index of 115 on the track.
Bowden, who will be a senior at Patrick Henry, produced personal-best performances on the way to a total of 1,918 points, 104 better than her third-place Region III effort. She won her heat of the 100-meter hurdles in 17.89 seconds, finished the 200 meters in 28.46, cleared a high jump of 4 feet, 5\ inches and heaved the shot 25-2.
Today, the 29-member field competes in the long jump, the javelin and the 800, Bowden's best event.
The Baltimore Spirit of the National Professional Soccer League drafted two area college players on Tuesday. Former Radford University soccer star Dante Washington was a third-round selection, 38th overall. Virginia Tech's Tarik Walker, an All-Metro Conference player who graduated in May, was selected in the second round. The Spirit will hold its three-day mini-camp Sept. 10-12 in Baltimore. The 8-year-old league plays indoors.
