SUMMER POWER USE SETS APCO RECORD

Appalachian Power Co. set a new summer peak demand for electricity Tuesday, surpassing the record set just two weeks ago.

According to the company, its customers used a record 5,155,000 kilowatts from 4 to 5 p.m. Tuesday. On July 13, Apco customers used 5,131,000 kilowatts, which broke the previous record of 5,110,000 kilowatts set July 13, 1992.

The company has its highest peaks in the winter, and does not expect to have any trouble meeting customer demands.

Virginia Power, which sells electricity in portions of Alleghany, Bath, Bedford, Botetourt and Rockbridge counties, climbed to an all-time peak of 13,295 megawatts on July 9, which exceeded the old record of 13,105 megawatts set the previous day.

Because of temperatures in the high 90s Wednesday, Virginia Power expected to peak at about 13,400 megawatts.
