Why bad things happen to good people is not really known, but such happenings sure bring out the best in people.
Words alone cannot express our gratitude to the Class of '93 at William Byrd High School, parents, staff, faculty and other caring people in the Roanoke and Vinton area. The outpouring of support for our sister Penny Gross Bazzell since her daughter Kate's car accident last November continues to amaze us. (Byrd students and staff and others raised money to help the Bazzells after Kate was paralyzed.)
We believe these students and many fine citizens have shown a depth of caring unknown in most communities. We are eternally grateful.
Numerous friends and relatives have been deeply affected by the many newspaper articles and stories that exemplify Roanoke's spirit of love and sharing. Unfortunately Kate's plight continues - our miracle not yet occurring - and is daily draining Penny's emotional reserves. She manages to cope, thanks to your kind support and prayers.
The fine example demonstrated by the citizens of your community and especially Kate's friends at William Byrd will certainly inspire future generations. May the Class of '93 continue to grow in such a loving human spirit!
We, Penny and Kate's family from across the United States, would like to thank all of you.\ Sincerely,\ Barbara Gross Bohn,\ Alton, Ill.
