FRENCH FRIES AND RU-486 TO GO

I HAVE an idea for Don Edwards (July 16 commentary, "Freedom of Choice Would Keep States From Harassing Women"). He believes the state harasses women who have decided to abort by requiring a 24-hour waiting period, requiring that women be informed about mental-health agencies and requiring that they receive a brochure with enlarged photos of fetuses. He says these things are unreasonable and a cruel effort to dissuade women.

Maybe since he supports unqualified approval of abortion, he can start working on this:

Gather enough funds to place a doctor at the drive-through window of conveniently located fast-food restaurants. By that time, the French abortion pill should be available here. Then, with no time taken off from work and no time away from family, women can order RU-486 with their fries! A lunch-hour endeavor! And maybe he wouldn't object to women getting some counseling, since those darn fries can take a few minutes to get anyway.

Excuse me? A drive-through during lunch is still too much of a hassle? How about just handing out the abortion pill along with condoms in high schools - just in case?

Ahh, the routine conveniences of a normal healthy modern society. AUDREY MOSLEY ROANOKE
