John Mellencamp teamed up with guitarist Joe Walsh in the first of three concerts to help victims of the Midwest flooding.

The sold-out show was held Wednesday night at an outdoor theater in Tinley Park, near Chicago. The $10 admission will go to the Red Cross.

Bob Dylan will join the show in another concert tonight in St. Louis.

Mellencamp said money from the Concerts for the Heartland will be nowhere near what the flood victims need. But he said he hopes concert-goers' generosity will do some good.

"The concerts are a passive way for people to be involved in the flood relief efforts," the Indiana native said.

Fearing that Madonna might strip on stage, Thailand's education minister opposes letting her perform at the National Stadium.

The Thais tolerate a massive sex industry but frown on public displays of nudity.

"If she strips off her clothes in front of the audience, could we tolerate that?" newspapers quoted Samphan Thongsamak as saying. "That would be against Thai people's ethics and culture and totally unacceptable."

Samphan had given a green light to plans for a Madonna performance later this year, but apparently he had second thoughts.

"If she really wants to perform here it should be in an enclosed venue, not the National Stadium," he said.
